May 2014
Back at the Stirling Hotel, where I was a few days ago. Often, when there are two restaurants in one hotel, one will be subtly more-salubriously named than the other.
I had assumed that The Bistro was the fancier one, but it isn't.
This place is like a fancy house, and my seat is like a throne. Definitely the fanciest seating in The Feed Report history.
Right. This is a typical family pub. The bathroom tiles add appropriate ambience.
I scour the menu for something fancy, but only the steaks are above $20.
Since the place is inexplicably a steakhouse, I'll give them a fair go, by ordering one of their steaks.
For this episode of The Feed Report, I'm joined by my mum, but she doesn't eat much. :)
I used to live in Stirling, but I don't remember this place being as big as this. It's probably the largest typical two-storey pub/hotel I've been to.
There is another (presumably less-salubrious) restaurant in the same building, and there are all kinds of tables, couches and chairs I can sit on.
After fifteen minutes of heavy city traffic, I escaped the city, for an endless drive through winding, dark, foggy roads that took an hour.
The road was so twisty and undulating that my pedometer app thought I was going for a walk.
The building has a lot of industrial vestiges in it, but some parts are done up nicely. There's a piano playing, and an open fire.
The bar staff are extremely helpful and friendly.
Another drive into the hills.
This place is a rather imposing house, on its own land. The place is a warren of rooms. I explore a little bit, and find the waitress.
I'm seated next to the fire. :)
I don't know what a jimmy is, but more than one of them have started a restaurant. If someone named Jimmy is the namesake of this restaurant, the name would typically be Jimmys or Jimmy's.
I find a spot of pedantry can be an ideal way to start the evening.
It's very cold in here. There's a draught coming in from somewhere.
A long drive to Echunga. Let's hope the feed is good. :)
This is the first in my "Hills of Feed" series, where I visit fancy restaurants in and around the Adelaide Hills.
The decor here is basic, but the place has an open fire and a homey feel.
After mopping up a few new (and recategorised) Adelaide restaurants, it's time to head to restaurants that are further afield. This starts next week.
Almost all these places are in the Adelaide Hills. Here they are:
Jimmies Restaurant 85%
$$$ Crafers - Pizza, Mediterranean 6 Main St
Lane Vineyard 83%
$$$$ Hahndorf - European, Modern Australian Ravenswood La
Lobethal Bierhaus 94%
$$$ Lobethal - Modern Australian 3 Main St
The Bistro 80%
$$$ Stirling/Aldgate - Breakfast/Brunch, Pub Food, Pizza 52 Mount Barker Rd
There's been a bit of buzz about this relatively new restaurant. The place looks a bit warehouse-y, but is packed. I'm seated on a stool, at a kind of bar.
