Shiki

Shiki @ Intercontinental on Urbanspoon

At the Intercontinental.

Got here via maze of lifts and stairs and concrete. Possibly the most confusing place in Adelaide.

ENTREE: VEGETARIAN NOODLE WITH SEAWEED
8/10

This was actually cold. Altogether it tasted very sea-ey but wheaty and flavourful.

Seated myself away from the central hub, where the chef regularly creates great bursts of fire.

TENDERLOIN STEAK
7/10

With zucchini, fried rice, miso soup.

Menu was complicated, due to myriad of dishes. The beef was moist and nicely seared on the outside. Too much, and it tastes like bad barbecue. The flakes of roasted garlic added little. I’ve never been much of a fan of miso, but this miso had a small amount of flavour, but its tofu and strands of mild seaweed made it somewhat interesting. The zucchini was nicely roasted, but its dipping sauce was peanutty and unusual. The fried rice was soft and dense, and probably comprised half the mass of the meal.

TEMPURA ICE CREAM
8/10

Served with Japanese plum wine sauce.

Once I worked out how to eat it, that dessert was rather tasty. The ice cream was the very creamy, buttery ice cream they serve in fancy restaurants. The crust was light and crispy, but not strongly flavoured. I don’t normally like alcohol flavours all that much, but the touch of plum wine added a zingy liqueur flavour to this dessert.
